Carbon monoxide alarm forces apartment complex evacuation

About 30 residents were evacuated for about two hours from Greenwich Court, 418 E. College Ave., at 3:30 this afternoon after an apartment's carbon monoxide alarm sounded, detecting "high" levels of the poisonous gas, Robert Kurzinger, an Alpha Fire Company assistant safety officer, said.

Alpha Fire Company responded to the alarm at the downtown apartment complex, he added.

Kurzinger said the reading on the carbon monoxide meter was 30 parts per million. The gas came from an outside source, he said, mentioning the possibility of a truck parked near the stairwell running all day.

There were no injuries, Kurzinger said, adding that two students who said they were experiencing "light-headedness" were examined by medical personnel and refused further treatment.

Jessica Hayward (sophomore-geoscience) and Allison Serman (sophomore-Spanish education) said two of their friends were being treated in the ambulance parked nearby.

"They're just getting checked out ... they had headaches," Hayward said.
