The road has been a scary place this season, but thankfully for the Penn State women's basketball team, it is back in the comforts of home.
The No. 12 Lady Lions (21-6, 11-2 Big Ten) will host Michigan (11-12, 2-10) tonight at 7 at the Bryce Jordan Center. This will be the second time this season the teams have met, with the Lions posting a 72-70 victory in Ann Arbor in late January.
Winning on the road has not been easy for the Lions, who are also coming off a disappointing road loss to Iowa on Sunday which decreased their conference lead to just one and a half games over Purdue with three remaining.
"[Penn State women's basketball coach] Rene [Portland] will have those players ready to roll," Michigan women's basketball coach Sue Guevara said. "I don't think there's anything more dangerous than a wounded Lady Lion."
The wounded ones will be looking to increase their current home winning streak to 17 games dating back to last season. In order for the Lions to do so, they must avoid foul trouble first and foremost which plagued them against the Hawkeyes.
"We got ourselves in foul trouble. We put them on the foul line too much," Portland said. "We just need to take care of what we have ahead of us."
That is a Wolverines squad that comes in overmatched, and with the possibility of finishing with the worst record in the conference.
The Wolverines, to their credit, played well in the first meeting against the Lions, and in order to have a chance must again hold Kelly Mazzante in check. In the first game Mazzante managed just 13 points, but Jess Brungo picked up the slack with a career-high 25.
"I think the person that really hurt us was Jessica Brungo, who is having a great season at Penn State," Guevara said. "I think Mazzante is such a dangerous weapon, sometimes you focus too much on her, then you have a Brungo or a Strom in there."
Another large factor in the first meeting was the fact the Lions played without the services of center Ashli Schwab, who at the time was sidelined with a stress fracture in her right leg. While she has been cleared to play, the training staff has watched her very closely in her limited minutes over the last few games. With or without Schwab, this is a game the Lions have to win if they are going to keep their cushion atop the conference standing before hitting the dreaded road on Sunday.
