Not many teams win games in overtime after hitting only one field goal.
The Lady Lions are no exception.
In the second overtime game of the season, the No. 13 Penn State women's basketball team (15-5, 5-1) fell to No. 20 Villanova (14-2) on the road last night, 73-66, in Philadelphia. Last night marks the Lady Lions' second straight loss in consecutive seasons to the Wildcats.
Penn State blew a two-point lead with less than a minute remaining in the game. Villanova managed to tie the game with just seconds remaining, and also had a chance to win the game in regulation after Jen Brenden traveled with three seconds on the clock to turn the ball over, giving the Wildcats one last attempt to hit a shot.
The Lady Lions sank only one field goal in overtime, as the Wildcats went on to close the game out with 73 points.
"We've got to get over this right away," Penn State women's basketball assistant coach Rick Hall said on the Penn State Radio Network. "Our main concern is the Big Ten. The kids will have the day off tomorrow."
Villanova started the game out red-hot and hit its first five shots of the game, immediately putting Penn State in the hole. However, the Lady Lions would come back on the sharpshooting of Kelly Mazzante, who finished with 28 points.
Mazzante was on fire and scored 12 points in the initial 10 minutes. She also passed Suzie McConnell-Serio to rank third in career scoring at Penn State, trailing only Susan Robinson and Kahadeejah Herbert. McConnell-Serio was recently named the head coach of the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx.
Penn State also missed valuable rebounding and post contributions from Ashli Schwab, who continues to be sidelined with a stress fracture in her foot. Schwab will have an X-ray today to see the extent of her injury. In her place last night, Hazel Joseph stepped into the role as the post player, but struggled early on.
"We thought we could get away with not playing Ashli," Hall said. "It may not have mattered anyway with the spread offense they were playing."
Joseph has seen significant playing time as of late with Schwab out.
"Hazel has two jobs," Penn State women's basketball coach Rene Portland said. "Run up and down the court and rebound, and that's all I'm ever going to say to Hazel this year. If she goes out of that, then we're in trouble. She always has to do that and that may lead to good things. If she starts thinking a different role for herself, that's not going to help Hazel and it's not going to help us."
Last night's game was Penn State's second overtime loss this season, both coming on the road against intrastate opponents. The first was against Pitt.
The team will return to Big Ten conference play this Sunday to cap off their fourth game of the week against Michigan.
