Gamblers in Pennsylvania may no longer have to cross state lines to wager on their favorite games if legislation clears the House next year.
Pennsylvania got into gambling as a state-sanctioned means of funding its programs with a weekly lottery drawing in 1971. It was used to raise money for programs to benefit senior citizens, particularly to help offset prescription drug costs. A portion of the revenue also goes to transportation for seniors, a property tax and rent rebate program and to assist 52 statewide agencies that help seniors at the local level.
