By Penn State guard Kelly Mazzante will serve as an alternate on the 2001 USA Basketball Women’s Junior National Team. Rosters for the team were announced last Monday after four days of trials at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The team will compete in the 2001 FIBA Women’s Junior World Championship in July in Brno, Czech Republic. Team USA is the event’s defending champion after winning the 1997 competition in Natal, Brazil.
As an alternate, Mazzante will be called upon to join the team if any of its 12 members sustain injury during training camp, which runs June 25 through July 9.
Mazzante, the Lady Lions' MVP for the 2000-2001 season, set multiple Penn State freshman scoring records. She led the Lions and the Big Ten in scoring, and was named the conference's Freshman of the Year. Mazzante was also selected to the all-Big Ten first team.
