NEWS

The Undergraduate Student Government Senate discussed possible changes to the senate bylaws last night in an attempt to move the restructuring process along.

For the sixth time in 11 years, Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity is moving, and for the second time, it's into Zeta Psi fraternity's house.

It's 11:15 a.m. and retired wrestling head coach Rich Lorenzo is standing in front of 30 eager students in the Rec Hall wrestling room. The light atmosphere of the class lends itself well to the subject matter, but the serious undertones do not go unnoticed. The subject couldn't be more serious -- it is self-defense.

In an effort to bring homes up to code with fire regulations, the Centre Region Council of Governments approved a program Monday night that will offer free smoke detectors to single-family home owners.

At Penn State it is a daily ritual almost as commonplace as brushing your teeth -- wading through the mountain of advertising inserts that fall out of The Daily Collegian in such high-traffic buildings as Willard and the HUB.

There were nights not too long ago when it may have been hard to believe that the Earth is getting warmer -- nights when the wind-chill factor reached 50 below zero and icicles five feet long formed under rain gutters.

New tenants won't find any small print or legalese when they sign their leases starting June 24. A new Pennsylvania law will protect tenants from landlords' traditional confusing legal jargon.

Friends of University student Chad Marek have begun to reflect on his recent death, remembering the way he deeply touched their lives while wondering why he chose to take his own on Monday morning.

SPORTS

The expansion of the women's basketball NCAA Tournament field from 48 to 64 doesn't necessarily broaden the chances of more teams from the Big Ten conference receiving an at-large bid.

It was somewhere deep into a cool March night, 1954, when the blue-and-white Boalsburg bus chugged into State College with a handful of weary bodies. They had no idea they were heroes. They just wanted to sleep.

At first glance, the matchup may seem rather dull -- perhaps insignificant.

Penn State (11-12 overall, 4-10 Big Ten), tied for eighth in the conference, hosting Northwestern (12-11, 3-11), last in the Big Ten.

HUNTINGDON -- The men's volleyball team decided to have some fun last night.

The No. 3 Lions (11-1, 3-0 Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) traveled to Juniata College to do battle with their intrastate and inter-divisional rivals, hoping to win their 10th match in a row. The team used the match to learn to create and to have some fun, winning 15-4, 15-2, 15-11.

Were it not for her height, the 75 inches that set her, literally, head and shoulders above most women, there would be little indication that Kim Calhoun is a basketball player.

The Los Angeles Raiders have a commitment to excellence. The Penn State Icers have a commitment to defense. The former is the last AFC team to win a Super Bowl. The latter is gunning for a national championship.

ARTS

Although the multitiered dance floor of Tatoo, 420 E. College Ave., may not have been the ideal setting for a live band, A Tribe Called Quest proved Monday night that the band, not the venue, makes the show.

Uncle Tupelo's Monday night show at Stoney's made me damn glad I wore boots.

No, not combat boots or hiking boots or L.L. Bean yuppie boots.
