Increased communication between the executive council and all sorority members is a goal shared by the new Panhellenic Council officers, elected last night.

University Police Services tackled its own opponent on Super Bowl Sunday and exposed an alleged gambling operation it suspects had been in operation in the State College Borough for nearly three years.

A University fraternity will decide tonight at its chapter meeting how it will memorialize a member killed last week in a helicopter crash.

Children enrolled in a local self-defense class yelled, "No!" as they blocked punches and moved across the floor. The determination in their voices seemed greater than might be expected from 10- and 11-year-olds.

While students endure the trials and tribulations of winter weather, local forecasters have been bearing the brunt of weather woes.

Northwest Airlink's flight from Detroit roared into the University Park Airport about noon yesterday. After the two propellers came to rest, three passengers exited the plane and 15 Detroit-bound travelers prepared to board flight 3093 as the airline kicked off its nonstop service to Detroit.
 
A University student was arrested early Friday morning for carrying a handgun after allegedly being involved in a fight that stemmed from a possible racial altercation outside of Tatoo nightclub.
 

SPORTS

Qualifying for nationals was on the minds of Jenny Weaver, Jill Mallon, Kelli Hickman and Erin St. John Saturday during the Terrier Classic meet in Boston. The members of the distance medley relay finsished fourth overall and are well on their way to the honored event.

The other teams in the tournament were clearly thrown off balance by the varied serving styles employed by the men's volleyball squad. From Ed Josefoski's jump serve to Ramon Hernandez's floating-drop serve, the Lions were able to keep their opponents disoriented throughout all their matches in the Mizuno Nittany Lion Invitational.

Clichés are a standard feature of the sports lexicon, but never more than when referring to No. 1 teams.

PITTSBURGH -- Cary Kolat received the biggest ovation a Penn State athlete probably has ever received in Pitt's Fitzgerald Field House.

As the puck ripped through the air, goalkeeper Jeff Crispino sprang from the net to turn it away. Crispino did his job, sacrificing his body to alter the course of a puck destined to reach the back of the net. But this was only the beginning.

Don't be alarmed if John Amaechi enters the NBA draft this coming June -- he's probably just testing the waters.

Following up a successful venture is always a challenge for any artist. The sophomore slump can hit anyone in any medium, be it a lame album or a weak sequel.

Listeners were put in the shoes of Australian soldiers and sheep shearers Thursday night, marking the beginning of another season of "Distinctive Styles" concerts in the HUB Fishbowl.

After a much-debated delay, the Golden Globe-winning, three-hour-plus Schindler's List will hit State College. It is scheduled to open Friday at The Movies, Garner and Beaver avenues, said a Cinema World Inc. representative.

Whether eating lunch in Waring Commons or just passing through the basement of Carnegie Building, Eric Teplitz is always selling himself.

It was a brutally cold Wednesday afternoon in State College, and Chris Scala had the right idea.
