SPORTS
 
There were no first-place finishes or no NCAA-qualifying times. Some came close, though, very close. Close enough to instill a new sense of pride and confidence in the women's track and field team.
 
The first half of the men's basketball season could have been named "The Great American Independent Road Trip."
 
Last Friday's tragic crash of the bus carrying Notre Dame's swimming team during a blinding snowstorm deprived two young swimmers of their lives and Penn State of its strongest opponent in this past weekend's dual fencing meet at White Building. Notre Dame cancelled all its intercollegiate athletics for the weekend, reducing the field in Saturday's meet from eight to seven participants.
 
The men's tennis team received a welcome to the Big Ten this weekend that it may not forget for some time.
